The History of the Blank Shields

Chapter 1: The Early Days

If ever a minifig needed a lucky break, Dhugal did. He and his companions were remnants of a defeated army in a razed kingdom. Winter was fast approaching, much of that years harvest had been burned or trampled in the recent war, and let’s face it: a soldier without a war is very slim on marketable skills. From scraps of Martin’s journal that have survived, we catch a glimpse of how hard that first winter was: he talks about digging under the snow to pull up roots and grasses, and mentions getting so desperate at one point that he nearly lost his sword by throwing it at a rabbit that wasn’t fooled into the snares. Indeed, there may never have been a Blank Shields Company if it wasn’t for the stroke of luck that had them find the ruins of an ancient keep, built into the top of a long-extinct volcano. They were able to suvive there through the winter, and come spring, began work to set it up as a base of operations.

Once the immediate issue of surviving the winter was finished with, Dhugal set out to start a career for himself. He was away from their adopted home much of that year, meeting nobles, speaking to nearby villages, and recruiting other stray soldiers who had made it through the rough winter. He traded the services of his soldiers to nearby towns for food and supplies instead of money, which endeared him to the local folk, and helped his reputation grow. By the end of that first year, the Blank Shields were up to 25 soldiers, and were comfortably ensconced in their new home. Further, they had plenty of supplies to survive the winter, from their work helping local villages with bandit troubles and harvest. The Blank Shields spent two more years there, building up a reputation, repairing the fortress they’d found, and establishing a friendship with the local Baron.

Alas, good fortune could not last...
