“She’s certainly beautiful,” Doyle said.
“No, she’s stunning,” I corrected him.
“Smart,” he added.
“And she has such an amazing laughter... just like...”
“Bells ringing from heaven,” he completed.

“And when she laughs like that, her face lights up like the sun...”
“When Flynt makes her laugh.”
“And Flynt always makes her laugh,” I chided.
“Brings her flowers...”
“Takes her for walks in the woods...”
“Says the right thing-”
“-in the right place-”
“-at the right time.”

I flopped down in the grass and let out a sigh.
“Maybe if Flynt was out of the picture, she’d look my way once in a while-”
“No way, forget it,” Doyle said, “You don’t stand a chance, Lou. Not... a... chance.”

‘Not a chance, Lou... Forget it...’
Doyle’s words echo in Lumina’s head, over 24 years later. ‘Not a chance, he had said. And yet, here I am,’ he thinks, ‘raising Daphne’s daughter...
‘Daphne... poor, poor Daphne... she died when Siffera was just two; may God have mercy on her soul. And Flynt’s in his grave now too...’

His mind wanders, and he suddenly thinks of Rose.
‘It could’ve worked out between us... if it weren’t for the whole Siffera issue... but she wouldn’t back out of it, and of course I wouldn’t...

‘But I did the right thing... right? Right?’
