Hey there, I'm looking for a little help from the castle community,
Especially those who were active AFOL's During the mid to late 1980's.  I'm
doing a little research on the "History" of the Castle factions, ie the
Crusaders, Black Falcons, Black Knights, etc.  Specifically, how they fit
together in a cosmological sense.
In researching Lugnet, and the set database, it is relatively easy to divide
the sets into groupings, but there are some questions I have, and I'm
wondering if Books, or packaging materials, and fan club resources,  during
this era could shed some light on the subject.
While the Black Falcons seem to be TLC's first attempt at "Bad Guys" (BTW
the coolest as well) and the Crusaders (unnamed until the late 1980's)the
good guys, the Black knights are a bit of an enigma.  I'm looking for a
little info on this subject.

Factions
The Black Knights are seen in armed conflict with the Black Falcons on
several occasions (6059)and (6057).  This would seem to indicate their
alliance with the Crusaders.  However in 6060 (Knight's Challenge) there is
a possible conflict between The Crusaders and Black Knights.  In an unbiased
look, this could also be a tournament between two friendly groups, much like
a sporting event.
If there is any evidence supporting either view, or even personal opinion,
I'd love to hear it.

Leadership
I am also wondering if there was ever a Crusader King?  His castle is
mentioned (6080), and his oarsmen ply the lakes, but I have no record of him.
Is the Black Monarch the knight included with Black Monarch's Ghost?  If so,
He's not included in his Castle.  It appears he would be the Leader of the
Black Knight Faction.  The Lady at the knights' challenge tournament is the
only person of importance we see in the Black Knight Hierarchy if the Night
in 6034 is not the Black Monarch.
Is Black Falcon's Fortress a reference to "THE" Black Falcon singularly, or
"The black Falcons" coroporately?  They appear to be a loose confederation
of armed soldiers with no declared leader.

Succession
The Black Knights Clearly replace the Crusaders as the keepers of Legoland
around 1992 when the last crusader is seen hauling his treasure cart out of
the realm (1463) and the black Falcons are seen for the last time this year
as well (clearly outgunned in the Sea Serpent set)

Were the Black Nights a splinter group from the Black Falcons?  There is a
switch in pennant color in 1986.  From '84-85 the Black falcons color guard
is Green and white, in 1986 it switches to blue and remains that way until
their demise.  The Black Knights color guard is blue and red, Was there a split?

Were the Dragon Master's Bad or good?  They Fight the Black KNights into
extinction, and suddenly the Royal knights appear.

I understand that in life it is hard to determine Good and bad factions,
just people with different idealogies, but Lego is generally not as
ambiguous as real life.

(...) Actually, I always assumed that in 6057, they were best buddies, while in 6059 they were enemies... Although, if you take a look at 6061, we find crusaders fighting... crusaders? So it appears to mean little. (...) The only strong evidence (...) (23 years ago, 2-Mar-01, to lugnet.castle)

(...) I would have to say that it is entirely subjective. It doesn't seem that any other than Wolfpack were really considered "bad," but it does seem that pretty much everyone fought every other group. Jeff (23 years ago, 2-Mar-01, to lugnet.castle)

(...) I wasn't collecting lago at the time of the black knights sets, thus I don't have any, but if a set is called the black Monarch's ghost, then apperantely the Black Knights leader died. NICK C-: (23 years ago, 2-Mar-01, to lugnet.castle)
