After nearly two years of not touching the code running the
Building Instructions Portal, Id like to do a
complete overhaul of the functionality. The original code was written back when
I was much more of a ColdFusion programming novice than I am now. I thought
perhaps I could simply clean up the existing code, but its ... well, how do I
say this nicely. Ugly beyond belief.
Id like to put a call out to any ColdFusion developers in the community who
would be willing to work on this rewrite project with me.
The goal is to make the much more robust than it is, add some new features, and
ensure that its built on a platform that allows for easy future updates.
If youre interested, you can reply to this thread, or preferably, send me an
email. (jakeATcountersinkdgDOTcom)

All,
After a bit of slow growth in the BIP additions, Ive decided to tweak the
content rules a bit. There is now a new prize category, reduced number of BIs
uploaded for all categories, and yet more prizes! For all the details check out
the site:
http://www.bricksonthebrain.com/instructions/contest2.cfm
Teaser
When the B.I. Portal hits 750 instructions, we will draw a random name out of
the virtual hopper.
Grand Prize
When the B.I. Portal hits 850 instructions, we will draw a random name out of
the virtual hopper.
Peoples Choice
When the BIP reaches 800 instruction links, we will pick the top 10 user rated
instructions and allow BIP users to choose their favorite. The winner takes home
the prize!
Editors Choice
When Jake - your friendly neighborhood BIP Webmaster - so chooses, he will
select his top choice. This is totally a personal choice, and based on...who
knows? Hes a bit crazy at times!
How to play
Entering the contest is easy: Simply add a link to your own building
instructions to the Portal! Each time you add an instruction link, or post a
review of an Instruction you get a Virtual Token added to a hopper.
And since you get more tokens the more you add to the Portal, the better your
chances are of winning!
What is considered a Building Instruction?
A building instruction in this context is anything that gives a LEGO building
idea from one person to another. This can be in the form of an LDraw file, a
PDF, Web slideshow, collection of photos... you name it.
What can I win?
Oh man, there are TONS of prizes. Check out all of them here:

Good luck!

After several weeks of work, I have updated the
Building Instructions Portal
site with some minor bug fixes, major functionality rework, and new features:
- Completely overhauled the registration/login user management system to make the system much more robust and problem free (when we re-launched this, there were originally a few bugs. Everything seems to be working fine now, but if you have any issues, please drop me an email)
- Added the ability to easily view more new BIs and randomly selected BIs
- Added a News and Updates feature to the home page
- Users can now search the BIP Blog, as well as the rest of the site
- Added a Featured BI archive, as well as the ability for you to vote on the next Featured BI.
- Added new top of page frame for easier viewing of BIs once you leave BIP
And dont forget about these recent updates:
- BIP Blog - Jakes random musings on all things LEGO
- BIP Store - Pick up some cool BIP gear and help support the site
- BI Inventories - Now when you add a BI link to the BIP, you can also upload an LDraw file and create an inventory of parts. This allows users to quickly access the parts on Bricklink or view an inventory of your BIs.(In partnership with BrikTrak and Bricklink)
- If you would like to make a donation to keep the BIP up and running, click the PayPal link at the bottom of every page of the site.
And of course, the BIP Contest Reloaded is still going on. The prizes now make
up a huge pile. You
cant afford to pass up this opportunity!
Hope these new features give you a kick!

Its a morning of announcements!
Head over to the BI Portal to check out our latest addition, the
BIP Blog.
This blog, as most blogs are, will be a collection of random thoughts, musing,
links, and other random content. The BIP Blog will be focusing mainly on the
LEGO building/BI/technique areas.
Check it out, and feel free to add your own
comments to the blog entries!
