THE LEGO MOVIE Sequel Set for May 26, 2017 Release

Everything will continue to be awesome. With the incredibly impressive box office hold of The LEGO Movie, it was inevitable that Warner Bros. would be moving forward with a sequel. The studio began developing a follow-up with screenwriter Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) weeks before the film’s release, and now Box Office Mojo reports that Warner Bros. has slated the untitled sequel for release on May 26, 2017. It’s unclear who will be spearheading the film behind the scenes, but LEGO Movie writers/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller previously said that they would probably produce the follow-up, so one imagines they won’t be returning as directors; they’re no doubt fielding a flood of offers for other projects at the moment.

After opening to $69 million and overwhelmingly positive reviews, The LEGO Movie’s current worldwide gross already stands at $202 million after just two weeks in release, and it’s expected to maintain its hold on the box office again this weekend. WB is also developing a Ninjago movie and a recent report suggested that it might hit theaters before a LEGO Movie sequel, but it appears that the further adventures of Emmet and Co. will instead come first.

LEGO Group Builds Creative Merchandising Program for “THE LEGO® MOVIE”

-First of 17 Building Sets, Playable Video Game Demo to be Displayed at Comic-Con-

SAN DIEGO, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL - The LEGO Group today announced that it will produce a collection of movie-inspired building sets celebrating the brand’s premiere as a theatrical film. The company has recruited an impressive roster of global partners to a broad, multi-category licensing program to support the much anticipated animated adventure film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee, “THE LEGO® MOVIE” is rapidly building buzz following its first released trailer and assembles on the big screen starting in February 2014.

“The LEGO brand has been a vehicle for creative storytelling around the world for decades, so it’s no surprise that there is such growing enthusiasm for the first LEGO theatrical film,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “We are thrilled to collaborate with our valued partners to build a varied and compelling portfolio of products through which fans of all ages can celebrate this LEGO brand milestone.”

Building Sets

Inspired by pivotal scenes in the film and starring key LEGO minifigure characters, a collection of 17 LEGO building sets will deliver all of the “THE LEGO MOVIE” action to the playroom. Fans will delight in highly detailed and functional vehicles and structures that reflect the creative versatility of the movie’s many LEGO themed backdrops, such as City, Wild West, and Space. Comic-Con International attendees in San Diego, California will see the first “THE LEGO MOVIE” building set unveiled at the LEGO booth (#2829) on Saturday, July 20.

Additionally, the company’s line of collectible LEGO Minifigures will receive its first Hollywood makeover with a series inspired by “THE LEGO MOVIE” cast of 16 new and “new-again” LEGO characters.

Videogame

In related news, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the chart-topping and award-winning LEGO videogames franchise from TT Games will include an epic gaming experience based on the film across all major console and handheld gaming systems. With more than 90 playable characters inspired by the film and 15 exciting levels, kids will be able to build an adventure like never before.

Movie-Inspired Merchandise

A roster of global licensees covering several categories will immerse filmgoers in the world of “THE LEGO MOVIE.” Perennial publishing partners Scholastic, Penguin, Ameet and DK Publishing will offer a range of readers, sticker books, activity books and movie guides. Apparel partners include T-shirts from Mad Engine, Isaac Morris, Kabooki, TV Mania and Casco Blu, hoodies from TV Mania, pajamas from SGI Apparel, TV Mania and Kabooki and undergarments from Handcraft Mfg. and Kabooki. Carry Gear and Grown Up will offer bags, including backpacks and cinch bags. Clic Time is producing clocks and buildable watches. MZB Imagination and Funtastic are creating an array of stationery items including notebooks, journals, folders, pens, pencils and pencil cases, erasers, rulers and luggage/bag tags. Functional key lights featuring movie characters are being produced by IQ HK. Storage partner ROOM Copenhagen is producing a lunchbox, lunch set, drinking bottle and storage and sorting boxes.

The Feature Film

“THE LEGO MOVIE” opens in some global markets the first week of February, 2014. The 3D computer animated adventure tells the story of Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

“THE LEGO MOVIE” stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, as the voices of the animated characters. The film is directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”) from their original screenplay, story by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, based on LEGO construction toys. It will incorporate some of the LEGO world’s most popular figures while introducing several new characters, inviting fans who have enjoyed the brand’s innovative toys and hugely popular video games for generations to experience their visually unique LEGO world as never seen before. The film is produced by Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”) and Roy Lee (“The Departed,” “How to Train Your Dragon”). “THE LEGO MOVIE” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Back in 1973 when I was 12, together with my younger cousin I made a 6 minutes
Lego film in Super 8, half of it using stop motion animation. Inspired by the
popular Apollo program, we built a rocket with several stages and room for the
LM, a launch vehicle, an aircraft carrier and many busses, cars and houses.
Minifigs were not invented yet, so we used small 1x1 brick men.

The film was a gift to our grandparents' golden wedding anniversary.
After the party our grandparents took the film and us to Billund, where we
showed it to Godtfred Kirk Christiansen. He liked it and had a copy made. We, in
turn, got a Lego factory tour and got some big sets to take home ;-)

The LEGO Movie Reveals Title Logo, Cool New Contest

We’re only about a quarter of the way done with 2013, but looking forward to next year, The Lego Movie should be on everybody’s radar. In addition to being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the awesome filmmakers responsible for movies like 21 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (not to mention the television series Clone High), the new movie has what sounds like an awesome plot matched with an impressive voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman.

But what’s even better? Now you’re creative input could be a part of the film.

In addition to the awesome title treatment you see above, Warner Bros. has announced a new contest that will allow movie and LEGO fans to create a 15-30 second video that, if selected, could be featured in the new film. The rules are a bit complicated, as there are some guidelines that need to be followed, so read on below for the official details:

The fan-produced clips will relate to an exciting scene in the film, in which the citizens of the LEGO universe rally to prevent an unspeakable disaster. They do this by quickly disassembling the elements of their environments, brick by brick, and rebuilding them into fantastic and fun hybrid vehicles and tools—the stranger and more innovative, the better, like rocket/dragons or butterfly/speedboats—to take part in an epic battle.

Using only LEGO bricks and non-licensed LEGO minifigures, contestants will select a character and set their action sequence in one of their favorite LEGO worlds, such as Lego City, Space, Pirates, Western, Vikings, Dino, Castle, and others. After building and recording their LEGO designs, they will upload the video to YouTube, and bookmark it on the rebrick.com.

Building Challenge page, where it will be open for voting from the entire ReBrick membership. The 25 videos earning the most “Likes” will ultimately be reviewed for creativity, originality, theme and suitability for the film by a panel of judges, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, writers/directors of The LEGO Movie.

All entries must also be filmed on a camera with at least 3.2 megapixels, and framed for a 2.40:1 aspect ratio.Only LEGO elements and figures may be used with no customized parts, and content must be suitable for children.

In addition to having the clip featured in the movie, the grand prize winner will get an amazing prize pack that includes a trip for two to Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles for a VIP tour; a chance to do a LEGO build with Miller and Lord,; “an exclusive LEGO film camera designed and built by the official LEGO model shop;” and signed souvenier items from the movie set. There will also be second and third place winners and bi-weekly smaller prizes that can be won during the challenge’s six-week run.

In order to enter all applicants must be over 16 years old and a registered member of Rebrick.com. The contest will begin on March 25, 2013 at 9:00 A.M and run until May 6, 2013, at 8:59 A.M., EDT. The winners will be announced on May 20th.

As for the actual film, The LEGO Movie will be in theaters on February 7, 2014 and stars Chris Pratt as Emmet an ordinary minifig who is mistaken as a hero who can prevent the entire Lego world from disaster. Teaming up with a band of strangers, he goes on a mission to stop an evil tyrant.

This was great! Some may recognize the rowhouses in the clip. They’re mine. I shipped them off to Austin, TX for filming and now they’re back with me at my office. They’re actually very well traveled. They were at Bricks By The Bay a couple of years ago too. Soon to be taken home and dismantled . . .
