Rob Schrab to Direct The LEGO Movie Sequel!
Director Rob Schrab (Community, The Mindy Project) will mark his feature
directorial debut overseeing construction on The LEGO Movie Sequel, the eagerly
awaited follow-up to the worldwide sensation The LEGO Movie. The announcement
was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and
Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed The LEGO Movie, are
writing the new feature based on a story by Lord, Miller, Jared Stern and
Michelle Morgan. In addition, Lord and Miller will serve as producers, alongside
returning producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee.
The LEGO Movie captivated critics and audiences on a global scale with its
irresistible blend of humor, imagination and fun. Warner Bros. is excited to
build our relationship with The LEGO Group with this new adventure, says
Silverman, and we join them in welcoming the multi-talented Rob Schrab to the
LEGO family as he takes the helm of The LEGO Movie Sequel.
We are so excited to collaborate with Rob, add Lord and Miller. He is a
comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one
works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor,
bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this
project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, Of
course!
In addition to his small-screen work, Schrab is well known as the creator of the
comic book series Scud: The Disposable Assassin. He also wrote, directed and
executive produced The Sarah Silverman Program, for which he gained a WGA
Award nomination. He previously earned a 2007 Annie Award nomination for Best
Writing in an Animated Feature Production, for the Oscar-nominated comedy
Monster House. In addition, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding
Original Music and Lyrics, and received an additional nomination for Outstanding
Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special for his work on the 81st Annual
Academy Awards.
The LEGO Movie Sequel is another piece of the Studios growing LEGO film
franchise, also including the upcoming Ninjago, slated for a September 23, 2016,
release, and an as-yet-untitled LEGO Batman feature, due out in May 2017.

Phil Lord And Chris Miller On The Upcoming LEGO Movies
From Ninjago to The LEGO Movie 2
Back in November, there were a few quotes from the Empire Podcast interview with
LEGO Movie and Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller worth analysing
in their own news story, and now you can enjoy some more, in the form of these
outtakes from our Oscars Special interview with the very same pair. In short, if
youre excited about Ninjago, The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Movie 2, click
no further, brick botherers.
Are you going to direct The LEGO Movie 2?
Miller: I dont think so. Were writing the sequel right now and obviously
producing all the other ones. Theres a challenge to make each one feel like its
own thing. Part of the fun is finding people like Charlie Bean, whos doing the
Ninjago movie, and Chris McKay who did so much on the first film. Each of them
have their own distinct voices and ideas for tone. So it will each have its own
personality and not just be, Hey, remember that last movie? Heres another one
just like it! So thats been a big challenge but so far its been going better
than I expected.
Lord: I think its nice for all these other films to have their own voice and
thats whats neat about working with all these other filmmakers. They come up
with solutions you wouldnt think of. Watching Charlie Beans sequences for
Ninjago is so gratifying because hes able to make it play without any dialogue
and has a really great visual style. Its really nice and refreshing. I think it
would get boring if we directed them all, quite honestly.
Will the other films have the same LEGO self-awareness that your film had?
Miller: We talk about them and oftentimes we say, What can you do in this
movie that you can only do because its a LEGO movie? Obviously youre not just
going to do a straight Batman movie. You have to take advantage of the medium
youre working in. So then you have the advantage of the Will Arnett version of
Batman. On top of that were trying to take advantage of the fact that its
LEGO.
Lord: Sometimes the more serious you take the material the funnier it is.
Theyre so cute. Theyre like three heads tall and they look like Smurfs, so if
they take themselves seriously theres something funny about it.
Youre writing LEGO Movie 2. You werent originally, so what changed?
Miller: We thought wed said everything we wanted to say about creativity and
imagination and the inherent nature of Lego, and that left-brain/right-brain
nature. So we were scared about trying to write something that felt like the
next chapter and new ideas and not just a rehash.
Lord: We also worried we didnt have enough time. Luckily, Chris McKay and
Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan all worked on the movie a bit in our absence and
really cracked the beginnings of a story and got us really excited; excited
enough to write it. We should be writing right now. Weve opened a Final Draft
document and titled it. I mean, thats really the hardest part. And weve chosen
the formatting. That is all thats happened so far. Weve been outlining a
bunch.
Miller: There are some really fun new themes that we didnt explore in the
first movie and got us really excited, so that its its own thing. With 22 Jump
Street we did the whole making fun of yourself for just doing the same thing
again. We cant do that ever again. You can only go so far up your own rear
end.
In broad strokes, what do you want to explore with the second?
Miller: Well I dont want to give you spoilers but we were really interested
in what happens to that boy whos in the meta story in the first movie when hes
four years older. When hes an adolescent how does that change his point of
view?
And its nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first
movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another
dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.
The LEGO Movie 2 is set for a 2018 release, The LEGO Batman Movie will come
out February 10, 2017, and Ninjago will hit cinemas on October 14, 2016. The
current issue, where more from Lord and Miller can be found, is out now.

THE LEGO MOVIE Sequel Set for May 26, 2017 Release
Everything will continue to be awesome. With the incredibly impressive box
office hold of The LEGO Movie, it was inevitable that Warner Bros. would be
moving forward with a sequel. The studio began developing a follow-up with
screenwriter Jared Stern (Mr. Poppers Penguins) weeks before the films
release, and now Box Office Mojo reports that Warner Bros. has slated the
untitled sequel for release on May 26, 2017. Its unclear who will be
spearheading the film behind the scenes, but LEGO Movie writers/directors Phil
Lord and Chris Miller previously said that they would probably produce the
follow-up, so one imagines they wont be returning as directors; theyre no
doubt fielding a flood of offers for other projects at the moment.
After opening to $69 million and overwhelmingly positive reviews, The LEGO
Movies current worldwide gross already stands at $202 million after just two
weeks in release, and its expected to maintain its hold on the box office again
this weekend. WB is also developing a Ninjago movie and a recent report
suggested that it might hit theaters before a LEGO Movie sequel, but it appears
that the further adventures of Emmet and Co. will instead come first.

Back in 1973 when I was 12, together with my younger cousin I made a 6 minutes
Lego film in Super 8, half of it using stop motion animation. Inspired by the
popular Apollo program, we built a rocket with several stages and room for the
LM, a launch vehicle, an aircraft carrier and many busses, cars and houses.
Minifigs were not invented yet, so we used small 1x1 brick men.
The film was a gift to our grandparents' golden wedding anniversary.
After the party our grandparents took the film and us to Billund, where we
showed it to Godtfred Kirk Christiansen. He liked it and had a copy made. We, in
turn, got a Lego factory tour and got some big sets to take home ;-)

The LEGO Movie Reveals Title Logo, Cool New Contest
Were only about a quarter of the way done with 2013, but looking forward to
next year, The Lego Movie should be on everybodys radar. In addition to being
directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the awesome filmmakers responsible for
movies like 21 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (not to mention
the television series Clone High), the new movie has what sounds like an awesome
plot matched with an impressive voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Will
Arnett, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Elizabeth Banks
and Morgan Freeman.
But whats even better? Now youre creative input could be a part of the film.
In addition to the awesome title treatment you see above, Warner Bros. has
announced a new contest that will allow movie and LEGO fans to create a 15-30
second video that, if selected, could be featured in the new film. The rules are
a bit complicated, as there are some guidelines that need to be followed, so
read on below for the official details:
The fan-produced clips will relate to an exciting scene in the film, in which
the citizens of the LEGO universe rally to prevent an unspeakable disaster. They
do this by quickly disassembling the elements of their environments, brick by
brick, and rebuilding them into fantastic and fun hybrid vehicles and toolsthe
stranger and more innovative, the better, like rocket/dragons or
butterfly/speedboatsto take part in an epic battle.
Using only LEGO bricks and non-licensed LEGO minifigures, contestants will
select a character and set their action sequence in one of their favorite LEGO
worlds, such as Lego City, Space, Pirates, Western, Vikings, Dino, Castle, and
others. After building and recording their LEGO designs, they will upload the
video to YouTube, and bookmark it on the rebrick.com.
Building Challenge page, where it will be open for voting from the entire
ReBrick membership. The 25 videos earning the most Likes will ultimately be
reviewed for creativity, originality, theme and suitability for the film by a
panel of judges, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, writers/directors
of The LEGO Movie.
All entries must also be filmed on a camera with at least 3.2 megapixels, and
framed for a 2.40:1 aspect ratio.Only LEGO elements and figures may be used with
no customized parts, and content must be suitable for children.
In addition to having the clip featured in the movie, the grand prize winner
will get an amazing prize pack that includes a trip for two to Warner Bros.
Studios in Los Angeles for a VIP tour; a chance to do a LEGO build with Miller
and Lord,; an exclusive LEGO film camera designed and built by the official
LEGO model shop; and signed souvenier items from the movie set. There will also
be second and third place winners and bi-weekly smaller prizes that can be won
during the challenges six-week run.
In order to enter all applicants must be over 16 years old and a registered
member of Rebrick.com. The contest will begin on March 25, 2013 at 9:00 A.M and
run until May 6, 2013, at 8:59 A.M., EDT. The winners will be announced on May
20th.
As for the actual film, The LEGO Movie will be in theaters on February 7, 2014
and stars Chris Pratt as Emmet an ordinary minifig who is mistaken as a hero who
can prevent the entire Lego world from disaster. Teaming up with a band of
strangers, he goes on a mission to stop an evil tyrant.
