Change in LEGO set numbering scheme?

[I'm posting this in .general because none of the database groups seem appropriate. Reroute FUT as appropriate.] I recently picked up one of the new Racers sets, Pro-Stunt, set #8350 (don't bother looking it up, it's not in the database yet). Now, (...)   Re: Train Set 113 Advice?

(...) approximate year the set was released...if it was before 1991 then the train will certainly not be 9V. If the set was releases in 1991 or later then it will be a 9V train. [Also, the train sets that are 9V are generally set numbers 4xxx, while (...) (23 years ago, 5-Aug-01, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.loc.au)

  RE: Train wheels

Well, I may have some spares in the 4.5/12V type. [Red wheels, on a black brick] [The difference is that the 4.5/12 were on a 2x4 brick, whereas the 9V come on a 3x4(6?) attatchment [not really a brick] with the suspension/connection moulding of the (...)   Re: More 1999 Ninja Ponderings

(...) The use of the 3xxx and 4xxx series numbers for next year's Castle Ninja release has resulted from the fact that the 60xx series is near exhausted. LEGO will be moving to a six-digit set number within the next couple of years. Grahame Reid (25 years ago, 22-Nov-98, to lugnet.general)
