# of Unopened Sets in Collection: 0
# of LEGO Pieces: ~15000-20000?
# of LEGOfests Attended: 0
# of LEGO Theme Parks Visited: 0

First LEGO Set: (72-85) Early BASIC set; (96-) 8230 Police Buggy
Favorite Theme(s): Technic
Favorite Set(s): 956 Auto Chassis
Favorite Piece(s)/Minifigure(s): Gear Reduction Unit; Flex System
Set/theme you would like to see:

Technic Subthemes. In fact I'd love to get a whole technic
Town, or even better, space theme going. Unfortunately, this
would probably be tough to market (and the sets would cost
a fortune.). But, I'm imagining something like taking some
existing LegoLand sets and enlarging them, and adding detail
and, most importantly, more realism. And the best part, we'd
finally get some other types of techic figures. And imagine
A technic building with lights and working features, appliances
  or whatrever.

Dinosaurs. Automated Walking and moving arms legs and tails.
Give us as many specialized pieces as you need to, just make
    them real.

Current LEGO Project: Just getting back into technic after ten
years of absence from lego. I've bought 15 technic sets over
the past two months. I'm building a 6 wheeled buggy using the
large offroad technic tires. It has 4 wheel steering and
  suspension for each wheel.

Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: Well, none as far as this group. But
I have done some cool things back as a kid, like building a 4
wheel drive, 4 wheel steering, fully indepently suspended vehicle
back in 83 or so. Lets see, what else. A robot arm with rotating
wrist and elbow (rotating, not just bending). A 6 foot freighter
based on scaling up the lego 'fire fighter' boat.

Other (Non-LEGO) Interests: Computers, software engineering, drawing
  biking, writing poetry.

# of LEGO Pieces: Wasn't this one of the tasks from Greek myth?
# of LEGOfests Attended: 0
I have gone to a couple of the traveling shows in malls, museums, etc.
# of LEGO Theme Parks Visited: 0
First LEGO Set: Mid 70s Basic set.
Favorite Theme(s): Technic, especially large models (their old VW,
  Model Team).
Favorite Set(s): old Technic "VW" (see below).
Favorite Piece(s)/Minifigure(s): The Technic differential.
Set/theme you would like to see: A PC case made from Lego bricks.
A car body (doors, fenders, etc...not frame) made from Lego bricks.
Life size...put it on a VW pan.
Current LEGO Project: Reading RTL; finding all my old sets and
even the directions too sometimes! :>
Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: Started on a kick-butt castle using
my King's Castle, etc sets, which my sister and her friends
TORE DOWN (&^&%$^%!!!!) at a party....
Also I've only ever broken about four or five pieces of Lego.
One was a 4x8 plate and another was a Technic beam.
Other (Non-LEGO) Interests: Computers, Electronic Kits/Projects,
  Air-cooled VWs.

Wow...Had seen this group in the list for a while but only recently
started reading it. I hope the extra text here at the end of
the Roll Call is appropriate.

My early memories of Lego included their old black motor, the one
that was the black box with two "bricks" sticking out the ends,
and the separate wires and battery box (3 C, 4.5v). The motor
looked kind of like a Chevrolet logo from the side: _-----_
                                                     I_ _I
                                                       -----
You get the idea, I hope. I used to take the hubs from their older
wheels and bother my dad to bring home 1/4" (7mm) wide rubber bands
from the office so I could use them as belts. I made a lot of windmills
by building towers atop the motor until I had streched out the "belt"
enough, then adding vanes to the axle at the top. I also think the
workings of the reversing switch inside the battery box got me
interested in electronics and eventually computers, too. :>

Later I remember one of the first "town" sets, before they really had
a "Legoland" with the big square grey base plates...probably in the
Big People era. I seem to recall it was all blue and had a lot of
tires, it was a building and not a vehicle -- perhaps a service station?
Later was the fire station, then getting some of the early Technic sets.

My favorite Technic was their big model car, about a foot long. I didn't
realize until later that it was basically a VW Beetle minus the body.
This was the car that had the grey "gas tank" up front, rack-and-pinion
steering, red seats on black pans, a 2-speed-plus-reverse gearbox
(the shift was in a blue housing between the seats), a 4-cyl horizontally
opposed engine with faucets for the spark plugs, hoses for the plug wires,
and strange yellow pylons down the lower edges which I now realize were
the VW heater boxes. It also had two of those coil-over-strut shock
things on each rear wheel, the only big departure from VW design (real
Bugs used torsion bars, kinda hard to model directly, but with an axle and
some rubber bands...hmm). By the time I had that I had one of the early
Technic motors, I think. I despaired of having two so I could steer _AND_
propel the car! :>

Then I got some of the first "castle" sets, Knight's Castle, King's Castle,
and a few others. These were cool as you could swing the backs apart
and ring them all around together in a giant castle. This later inspired
me to build a Really Big Castle [tm] but see the sad story above.

More recently I have gotten some of the Model Team sets, the semi cab,
and the flatbed semi w/helicopter. Also, a few of the newer Castle sets,
with the green dragon.

I guess it's a common theme here, but I had noticed over the past few
years that Lego sets were starting to have more 'special purpose' pieces
in them. It started with the old Castle wall pieces, which were OK with
me, because you could still do different things with them. But some of
the newer sets I see have pieces that I can only see fitting that set.
I get the impression this has been hashed over many times before, though.

Reading the ng inspired me to get out my old Legos and to also get a
1776 Blue Bucket O Lego at Wal-Mart. :> While there I also got a
6581 Dig N' Dump, mostly because I remember the bulldozer scoop/truck
bed end piece from waaay back.

I have just started to visit some of the WWW sites in the FAQ. Perhaps
this has been asked before, but is there a listing anywhere of _all_
the known sets, with model numbers, names, piece counts, etc? Or would
legal considerations prevent this if it didn't come from Interlego AG?
I realize there are catalogs, but I think it's a safe bet they don't
have the first couple of Lego sets I ever played with still in there. :>

Well, that's my delurk! Since spamming seems to have become a problem
since I last posted to USENET in volume, please make the obvious change
to my reply-to. Thanks all!

Matt R.

Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: Hmmm... Well, during the last "buy 1 get
1 half price" sale at K-mart, I completey freaked a cashier when I
walked up with (literally) a shopping cart full of sets. Most of the
sets had no price stickers, so she had to scan a few at a time to
figure out pairs of sets to ring up together. I'm sure I'm famous to
the employees of that store. :-)

Other (Non-LEGO) Interests: Computer games, Homebrewing

				Old sets.....you know the routine
# of Unopened Sets in Collection: NONE!!!! Why buy them if you can't play

# of LEGO Pieces: 9,873 and 1 / 2 (I've got a broken piece
:(..............)
# of LEGOfests Attended: 0
# of LEGO Theme Parks Visited: 0
First LEGO Set: I don't know which one came first. I got a police set in
the late 70's, maybe 77. It had mini-figures...but they didn't have any
facial features, or arms...plus their legs were all one piece! I've still
got at least on of those! I also had a Spirit of St. Louis, and a Red
Helicopter really early on...So I'm not sure which one came first. My
first set with Mini-figures was a coast guard base....that must have been
78 or 79. I also had two of the 79 series space sets. I'd really like
to find the instructions for those!!
Favorite Theme(s): Space/Town/Train!!!!!!!!!!
Favorite Set(s): Probably my first Space set...I don't know the
number...but it has a Ship "ID" number piece that says LL924. This is how
I always referred to it! My two other favorite sets was the original
Kings Castle...Man I still have hundreds of yellow pieces! And a
non-motorized European Train set that I got in 1983!
Favorite Piece(s)/Minifigure(s): My favorite Minifigure is the one that
came with my space set. I've used the same head but changed the body as
"his" "rank" "increased" (Really as new colors of space figures came out.

Set/theme you would like to see: Lego Air force. OR A classics reissued
set...with some of the old sets reissued! They do it for Star Wars and
other toys why not Lego. (I can hear the collectors screaming
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Current LEGO Project: I'm working up to Modeling a Lego train set....But
I've got to save the $$$$$ first!!!!

Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: In 1980 at the height of Battle Star
Galactica I built a Lego "viper" to go with the toy viper I bought. Well
it's now 1997 and I still have the same set now! It is built around the
pieces from the original Space set and modeled in red. It's gone through
numerous modifications but the base structure, cockpit, and wing assembly
are still the same! So it's a 17 year old Lego creation!!! My other
claim to fame is a three story Lego house modeled in yellow....Can we say
Kings Castle from 1984?????????
