.Space Subthemes

Many builders have created space subthemes or factions over the years. Some factions have many different builders, some have just one. A subtheme is any group of creations (or possibly just one) that has some sort of story or a set of common features. Subthemes should have community interest or the possibility of others contributing MOCs. Here is an overview of some of those subthemes. These aren’t rules or guidelines, let nothing here inhibit your creativity. (Note: Blank sections indicate that no information has been provided, or that the subtheme is not as developed as others)

   Ideology:
Colors: Red and Gray
Creator: Chris Giddens
Builders: Lenny Hoffman Chris Giddens Rick Hallman, and many more!
Key Characters: Moozaf Blastov
Friends: Jade Empire
Foes: Pre-Classic Space

About: In Soviet Russia, LEGO blocks you! The Eastern Block is the commie faction of LEGO Space. One shouldn’t expect to be treated well by this faction unless you happen to be a member of their politburo. Their ships tend to use older technology that have been tested and proven rather than new technologies that haven’t been “shaken down.” This, of course, causes them to lag behind other, more ambitions, factions. They’re also not fond of PCS and their pesky ideals of freedom and justice. Pfft!

3vil

   Ideology: Subjugation of mankind
Colors: Black, Red, and White
Creator: Mark Sandlin
Builders: Tim Deering Mark Sandlin Tom McDonald
Key Characters: 3vil Grand Admiral Sandlin, Dr. Terrible, Dr. Cranium
Friends:
Foes: Everyone

About: 3vil is by far the most evil faction to grace the LEGO space territories. So evil are they, “L337-speak” is actually one of their official languages. To be involved with 3vil is to be an underdog. 3vil has no allies whatsoever. Their only goal is complete domination of the universe. Whether you are a fascist Iron Reicher, a fundamentalist Galactic Inquisitor, or a Space Hippie who’s stench overwhelms a ship’s life support systems, you are undoubtedly on 3vil’s “To kill...” list. They are a force that good factions fear, and other evil factions get stabbed in the back by.

Floating Heads

Ideology: Float and enjoy their new lease on life
Colors: Gray and any non-yellow head
Creator: Tim Deering
Builders: Tim Deering, Lenny Hoffman, Ryan Wood
Key Characters: Dr. Op, Tommy
Friends:
Foes:

About: The Floating Heads are a rather distinct faction that isn’t involved much with galactic politics. As their name suggests, this faction is a group of individuals who’ve made the final commitment to part with their sickly, deteriorating bodies and live out new lives as...well...floating heads. The floating heads are pioneers in floating technology. If it floats, odds are this faction was behind its development to some degree. When they aren’t zipping about through space, floating heads enjoy their hobbies, recreation, and work routines on their patented floating rocks! Finally, before you ask, no one really knows how they go to the bathroom...

Galactic Inquisition

Ideology: Spreading throughout the galaxy, demanding humans repent or be judged
Colors: Gray and Tan
Creator: Dan Rubin
Builders: Dan Rubin Jeremiah VanderMark
Key Characters: The Inquisitor General
Friends:The repentant
Foes:The sinners

About: “If you pray once a day, the Inquisition will go away.” That is the exceedingly popular rhyme spoken by those who have been hit by the Galactic Inquisition. This faction is a powerful group of crusading theologians who wish to convert the Galaxy. Under the command of the Inquisitor General, this faction’s sole purpose is to “save” those who are repentant and smite those who sin. The Inquisition is currently sweeping across the galaxy on a tidal wave of religious zealotry. Like 3vil, the Inquisition doesn’t have any allies. Sinners and saints transcend meaningless political borders in their eyes.

Iron Reich

Ideology: Extermination of Blacktron2 and Space Hippies
Colors: Gray
Creator: Keith Goldman
Builders: Keith Goldman
Key Characters: The State
Friends:
Foes: Space Hippies

About: A fascist ideology is what this faction slams home with an iron fist! The Iron Reich is often regarded as one of the toughest factions in the galaxy. This is primarily because ships and bases built by this faction are designed more for robustness rather than aesthetics. Iron Reich units can be easily recognized since they are typically cruder in appearance and only come in the grayish color of iron. For those familiar with the ancient war known as WWII, one would think that the fascist ideology of the Reich would clash violently with the communists of the Eastern Block fairly regularly. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. In spite of their large galactic presence, the communist factions do not significantly concern the Reich. Instead they seem to be obsessed with exterminating the Space Hippies and what’s left of the already-near-extinct Blacktron II Empire. Why the Reich is so concerned with these near-insignificant groups is unknown to everyone but the Reich leaders themselves.

Jade Empire

   Ideology:
Colors: Green (Sand and Regular) and Gray (Light and Dark)
Creator: Chris Giddens
Builders: Lenny Hoffman Ryan Wood Chris Giddens Steve Runnels Chris Maddison Nathan Wells Keith Goldman
Key Characters:
Friends: Eastern Block
Foes: Iron Reich

About: The Jade Empire is often considered to be the “Mao’s China” of the Eastern Block’s “Lenin’s Russia”. This faction is a stern one where pride, honor, and respect are large governing forces. Though their pride might indicate otherwise, the Jade Empire is actually one of the weaker “major” factions in the galaxy. They have also been viewed by many as little more than a “puppet faction” for the Eastern Block tasked to accomplish operations that are deemed to be too politically risky for the Eastern Block itself to handle. This view has been deemed highly offensive to those within the ranks of the Jade Empire and has served as motivation to prove themselves to be an independent group. Even though they are still allies with the Eastern Block, the Jade Empire is known to regularly commit actions that go against the EB’s grain just to assert their independence in the eyes of the rest of the factions.

LEGO Space Force

   Ideology:
Colors: None
Creator: Mark Sandlin and Dan Jassim
Builders: Dan Jassim Mark Sandlin
Key Characters: Grand Admiral Sandlin
Friends:
Foes:

About: The LSF is a rather ambiguous faction. It is known that they stand on the side of “good,” in the galaxy, but beyond that, fairly little is public about the LSF’s ideology. But whatever distinction this faction loses due to its lack of a “mission profile” of sorts, it gains and then some thanks to the fleet at its disposal. This is because the LSF is the home faction to some of the most distinguished capital ships that have graced the galaxy. These ships include the Dragonstar, the Explorer, and the Gibraltar. The primary enemy of the LSF is a race known as the Adaloids. These humanoid jungle people look fairly primitive at first glace. However, such perceptions quickly end when their sizable fleet of manta fighters comes out of hiding to lay waste to your vehicles.

Ministry of Space

   Ideology:
Colors: Light gray, red, and blue
Creator: Chris Giddens, with Kevin Blocksidge
Builders: Chris Giddens, Kevin Blocksidge
Key Characters:
Friends: PCS
Foes:

About:

Ideology: Peaceful Exploration of Space along with a Powerful Defense of Space
Colors: White and Gray
Creator: Chris Giddens
Builders: Chris Giddens, and many more!
Key Characters:
Friends: Star Rangers
Foes: 3vil, Eastern Block, Jade Empire

About: These are the universal good guys of the galaxy and arguably the largest faction of them all! Freedom and justice for all is their primary goal as they work tirelessly to stem the influence of factions such as the Eastern Block, the Jade Empire, and most notably, 3vil. A PCS member’s hobbies generally include frap gun collecting, fleebnork extermination, and thinking of new “manly” uses for the “girly” bellville window parts.

Star Rangers (a division of PCS)

Ideology: Bringing Justice to Space and gettin’ to shoot stuff too
Colors: Blue and Gray
Creator: Chris Giddens
Builders: Chris Giddens Ryan Wood Steve Runnels
Key Characters: Captain Fazoom, Lance Beefpile, Venus Fleebtrap
Friends: Pre-Classic Space
Foes: 3vil, Eastern Block, Jade Empire

About: For all intents and purposes, the Star Rangers are as close as you’ll come to seeing “Space Marines” in the LEGO Galaxy. While the “regular” PCS divisions fight the forces of unpleasantries in space, the Star Rangers are charged with taking the fight to the ground with planet-side bases, drop ships, and marines. Aside from this difference, the Star Rangers and PCS are the essentially the same. Both have a fetish for Bellville windows and weaponry that fraps things. And neither has a particular fondness for factions that don’t work towards peace, justice, and all that good stuff.

RastaSTARians

Ideology: Wandering the universe, planting seeds and letting them grow
Colors: Black, Red, Yellow, and Green
Creator: Lenny Hoffman
Builders: Lenny Hoffman Felix Greco, Kevin Heckel
Key Characters: Astro Marley
Friends: Space Hippies
Foes:

About: The RastaSTARians is a faction similar to the Space Hippies in some regards. Like the Hippies, their primary reason for existing is to cultivate that next crop of weed from the farms they have hidden throughout the galaxy. Their hobbies including puffing the magic dragon, watching psychedelic movies while puffing the magic dragon, listening to mood music while puffing the magic dragon, selling the magic dragon, and playing the stock market. The heavy smell of marijuana aside, the RastaSTARians do smell like they at least bathe every now and then. The RastaSTARians also maintain an alliance with the Space Hippies, primarily because they are the largest consumer of the weed the Hippies cultivate throughout the galaxy.

   Ideology:
Colors:
Creator: Felix Greco, with ideas from Chris Giddens and Paul Hartzog
Builders: Felix Greco Joe Meno Nik Pieniazek
Key Characters
Friends:
Foes:

About: The Sea Monkey faction stands out since it is the only faction in the galaxy that doesn’t have much of a presence in space. Instead, they are a purely aquatic race that contributes to the galactic civilization not with ships or fighters, but with intellect and engineering. Aside from their dealings with Human aquatic facilities, the Sea Monkeys generally keep to themselves and little is known about them. It is also rare for a Sea Monkey to be seen away from his/her home world, but when it happens, it’s usually for a very good reason.

Space Hippies

   Ideology: Peace, Love, and Harmony
Colors: White and Yellow, or Multicolored
Creator: Daniel Rubin and Ley Ward
Builders: Daniel Rubin Ley Ward
Key Characters:
Friends: RastaSTARians
Foes: Iron Reich

About: The Space Hippies are by far the most annoying faction in the Galaxy. The Iron Reich wishes to exterminate them. The PCS doesn’t really want to stop the Reich from doing so. And all the other factions view them with scorn and nausea induced from their B.O. The Hippies spend every waking hour of their time doing one of three things; smoking pot, making love, or protesting the “capitalist and imperialist” actions of virtually every other faction in existence. So dedicated the Hippies are to their skewed idea of love and peace, they sometimes build starfighters so they could spread their message of love more forcefully throughout the galaxy while completely ignoring the irony of it all.

Space Pirates

Ideology: Survival, with a bit of pillaging thrown in for laughs
Colors: Gray, White and Yellow
Creator: Soren Roberts
Builders: Soren Roberts, Tony Hafner
Key Characters: The Guildmaster
Friends:
Foes:

About: Shiver me spacey timbers...the Space Pirates are a constant threat to ships belonging to all factions. For pirates, this particular faction is well organized and well equipped. There have been times when the pirates have fielded large capital ships to complete their operations. This has lead to rumors that someone or something may be helping the Pirates with their operations. But so far these rumors have been exactly that...rumors. Their purpose in life is as simple as any: To plunder ships and hopefully get rich doing it!

Tech West

Ideology: Life on the frontier of space; ranching, trade, or bounty
Colors: Brown, Tan, and Gray
Creator: Gil Shaw
Builders: Gil Shaw Ryan Wood Shane Larson
Key Characters:
Friends:
Foes:

About: This group is by far the most obscure of all the factions. While everyone else busies themselves with their affairs in the galactic core, the Tech West faction constantly move deeper into the fringes of the known galaxy. It is with this faction that the ideals of “The Wild West” remain alive. Because they are far from any major faction that could help them in case things get dicey, the Tech West faction relies solely on themselves to get things done. Bounty hunting is common place within this faction since real law enforcement officers are a luxury in most Tech West colonies. Because of the distance that separates them from everyone else, the Tech West faction doesn’t have any formal enemies or allies.
